Excursion: The Business of Chocolate, Geneva Getaway

What a wonderful day we had thursday ! Geneva is one of the cuttest city I have ever seen in my life. The contrast between Chicago and Geneva is huge but it just one hour of train so that’s really relaxing.

The first thing we did was to visit the Grahams’ chocolate shop. In Geneva this shop is an institution. It is set up since twenty-five years. It is a familly business in which everybody is fascinated by chocolate. They showed us differents machines by which they create the different products and then the father told us more about the marketing. For example, when we enter in the shop, there is a very strong chocolate smell. That’s totally intentional. Moreover, one of my classmate asked a very interesting question: are you sure that your chocolate come from a fair trade way ? He answered that the chocolate comes from different suppliers enrolled in a fair trade way of production. It was a very good moment to share with everybody and I am very happy to have discovered that place.

Then we came to a bakery where we ate very delicous cupcakes. After a guest speaker talk, our professor, Valerie Beck, gave us cacao beans. It was the first time in my life that I tried and I don't like very much despite I love chocolate.

The third place that we visited was a very fancy and elegant hotel. Many influent people have slept in that place. The manager of the hotel told us that the hotel's owner wanted to have a european design. It remembers me some hotels in Italia for example.

We lunched in a vegetarian restaurant. It was the first time I ate vegetarian food. The fruits were excellent and we had the honor to taste the Oprah Winfrey's favorite brownie. It was delicious !
We had also a great surprise: the Geneva’s mayor came to the restaurant and talked with us about his role of mayor and what he has to do.

In conclusion, it was a great day in Geneva. All the different places that we visited were interesting but my favorite was the Grahams’ chocolate shop with the Chocolate Bretzel.

  1. Romain, I'm delighted you enjoyed Geneva!

Part of the assignment was to discuss chocolate supply chain problems and solutions, and to describe what you learned about the businesses visited; you alluded to these items just briefly and could tell us more.

And, remember to add links to the websites of the businesses visited, or people we met, or other sites of interest. This helps your readers learn more, and maximizes the effectiveness of a blog.

Overall, nice job describing your impressions of gorgeous Geneva!
