Mentoring According to David, by David Bilongo

Mentoring according to David

The day begins by the fact that I was late, actually we had an optional event very early at 7:30 AM. We came to a big room and the thing interesting was the fact that there were many women and the most of them doing well in their business. The other thing very interesting and funny was the process for meeting that women. It was a kind of speed dating and we just have 7 minutes to talk with the person and to begin to network. Thus I can talk to Adela Cepeda because I like finance and she is a finance specialist since 1980.She is the president of A.C Advisory which is a full service, independent minority and women owned financial advisory firm that provides superior services to government. During this interview, instead of to talk about her. She preferred to listen to me that corresponds to one of the principle of the article when you meet with a mentor, you should lead the discussion. In this way I could be reassure by her on the fact that I want to work in this area, that only possible with work a lot, like what you do and she gave me her good feelings on being the mentor of someone.

After few steps, we had the chance to way up in the John Hancock building where we had an access to a tremendous view of Chicago. And it`s only like this you can realize that Chicago it`s a big city with many activities. We met the associate Sales Manager Christopher Rondeau, he has to be the liaison between different areas: hotel, restaurant, and bar. Through this testimony ,we learnt new projects of the company with a building in Philadelphia but especially how he manage to network first internally with several advices: be early on time ,be loyal, be respectful, be prepared. Secondly externally, which is linked to volunteering, in fact the company used to belong to business association for instance the Green tie, according to Christopher it`s the Karma.

Before to go to lunch, we went to the tour of Google with a pleasure and we were not disappointed by the offices rather impressive to be in one of the biggest company of the world. We had an appointment with Matt and Megan Danielson who takes care of the marketing and the advertising .Thus we learnt more about the spirit, the soul of google and the future projects of the company with notably Google now
But especially more about our concepts with the networking internally, actually the company used to promote some programs with the Global rotation program which allows to employee to work in other offices of the company around the world; we have also the Intramural/team event which allow to federate employees. Megan added more about the mentorship with some leadership coaching provide by the company, that mentorship is very important and necessary in Google in order to understand the company. As for as the volunteering, it`s a value which belongs to Google` s culture, they want that their employees do something which can raise the value of the company.

In eating we met another guest speaker Gigi, she is in charge of greeting French here in Chicago and additionally a French teacher. She told to us her background very interesting and she gave us advices if we want to do an internship here that we had to put our characteristics toward and to ask ourselves: How we can inspired and what is your added value? For the volunteering she made the difference with the French system and she emphasized on the fact that in this country it`s necessary and beneficial because you can be a mentor.

  1. David, you did a wonderful job exploring the mentoring theme of the course, such as by connecting the assigned article to your own experience at the speed-mentoring event we participated in, and demonstrating that it is the role of the mentee to be prepared and ask questions.

Remember to add hyperlinks to your blog posts; for example, links to Adela Cepeda's website, to 360Chicago and Google's Chicago office, and to Gigi's LinkedIn page could give your readers the chance to learn more. Links are a benefit of an electronic article instead of a traditional print article. And links are also a way for you to give a gift of appreciation and exposure to your mentors and guest speakers, because a link raises their profile. That's the power of blogging as networking!

  2. Hello David !

I agree with you, it was enjoyable to visit Google company. I find it give the desire to work for a company like this one. As you said, It was interesting to heard about Megan’s advises. She pointed out the value of volunteering in our life.
I understand how it was important to share what we know to help others.
As you know, in France it’s less common to value our voluntary actions.
In the USA, I think it’s a need.
In fact, people can learn about you when they know what volunteer’s action you did before. When you are volunteer you spend your free time doing your one’s own choice and for the benefit of someone else.

    Have a good day

  4. I agree with you, it was enjoyable to visit Google company. The manager Megan insisted really on networking and group working and I think that google is one of the companies wich ally the two points. In fact, people can learn about you when they know what volunteer’s action you did before. In France the voluntary service does not almost exist

    Have a good day David

    Best Regards,
