Monday, March 30: The Business of Mentoring: Helping Others to the Top

Today we have learned about The Business of Mentoring and how people are able to help each other at a business to make the it successful. Also, I saw the difference between work atmospheres in companies.

My day started with a visit this amazing place-John Hancock building with beautiful views of Chicago. This inspired me. When I saw this big city from the observation deck I thought about all of opportunities that we have and that nothing is impossible for us. Also, we met the Associate Sales Manager, Christopher Rondeau who talked about the way that he does business.

During these two weeks of business excursions we are working on important subjects like networking, mentoring and volunteering.

Mentoring is the help. Mentor explains to the mentee how the business works. The mentee needs to ask questions about the work process to learn more and to be successful in what he or she is doing. One of the most important things during this process is to build a relationship, to be open and to be precise in what you want to learn. The mentee is taking advices and experience. The mentor can also be beneficial because this new relationship with motivate and help a person succeed in a part of the network. During your career it is very important to build professional network because in different situations you may need some help. Also, when you have a good network, you have more opportunities to collaborate and to develop your business.

I liked example of mentorship on Google. Person who comes to work at this company has from 6 month to 1 year to learn. Mentors from Google consider this person as a friend who can ask questions about everything. Also, this company has some mentorship opportunities, for example Women@Google and leadership coaching. I would like to talk about Google a little bit more because for me, this is an example of what a good company looks like. As I already said, mentoring is important for Google, but for intern and extern networking to. Relationships between employees are the center of attention, for example they are eating all together to know each other and have team events. All these events and company polices provides mentorship for employees, good relationship and great teamwork!

We finished our day with a good lunch at Lyfe Kitchen and amazing macarons at Alliance Patisserie!

  1. Alina, you made very perceptive comments about differences between company environments, and about the connection between mentoring and networking.

I wish you had attended our speed-mentoring event to experience additional mentoring and networking first-hand.

Good job noting the importance of both internal and external networking!
